Our Choice of the Best medium size

A medium sized cafetiere, say 4 cup or 6 cup, fits most coffee drinkers' needs perfectly. There's enough room to make a coffee for all the family, as well as the chance to make just one or two cups, so long as you are able to add the correct amount of water and coffee grounds.

Our choice of medium sized cafetieres starts at 4 cup capacity, but we have also include where possible 6 cup cafetieres, and a few 8 cup capacity models too. For anything larger than this, see our larger cafetieres page here, and of course for anything smaller, such as a 3 up cafetiere, see our small cafetieres range here.

In our medium cafetiere choice above we have tried to include models from the best known names in cafetiere manufacturing, such as La Cafetiere, Thermique and Bodum, as well as one or two quality models from John Lewis own brand. There are plenty of styles to choose from, including of course the standard glass style cafetieres, as well as one or two stainless steel cafetieres available, many of which also offer thermal or insulated walls, keeping your coffee hotter for longer.

What is a Cafetiere?

A cafetiere or French Press is a device invented in France well over one hundred years ago to brew coffee. The modern French Press is basically a narrow lidded glass or plastic cylinder in which sits a wire-screen filter attached to a plunger - ground coffee is soaked in hot water and the plunger separates the grounds from the hot beverage. The taste of coffee made with a cafetiere is strong, thick and heavy, and may not be to the liking of some people. But people who do like this type of coffee pronounce it more delicious than any made by the drip method.
